Thein Well Co

Our roots reach back to 1893, when Eugene Thein settled in Clara City at age 19 and used his blacksmithing skills to become the area’s resident well driller. He drilled his first well by horsepower, beginning a family tradition that now spans five generations. Bob and Mike Thein are fourth-generation owners, each with more than 35 years in the water well industry, while fifth-generation family members Zack, Andy, and Tony are active in project management, drilling, and commercial pump installation and service. We employ more than 20 full-time people with experience and training in their respective divisions.

Over the years, we have expanded from our original Clara City location to offices in Rochester, Spicer, and Monticello, allowing us to serve a six-state North Central region. We are licensed to provide services in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Nebraska. We construct, install, and maintain wells and water systems of all sizes, including residential, municipal, irrigation, livestock, and poultry wells. Our work also includes complete pump design, installation, and service; environmental drilling; and geothermal drilling and heat-loop installation. We have more than 25 years of experience installing vertical geothermal loops for heating and cooling systems in homes and commercial buildings.

Innovation has long been part of our history. In the early 1900s, we pioneered large-diameter well construction using percussion drilling. In the 1960s, we pioneered down-the-hole high-pressure air-hammer drilling to complete wells efficiently in creviced rock formations. During the 1970s, we became an early user of television well monitoring in our North Central operating region, helping us analyze and solve well problems accurately and efficiently. In the 1980s, we developed and patented a procedure designed to improve efficiency and reduce or eliminate sand-pumping problems in consolidated-formation wells. Today, we continue to bring our experience to water systems, environmental drilling, and geothermal loop installations, with a focus on helping deliver clean, fresh water safely and in a timely manner.
