Our roots in Fredericksburg go back to 1930, when Robert B. Payne began delivering wood and ice to local homes. A 27-year-old Fredericksburg native and former U.S. Marine, he started with little more than a horse, a buggy, and plenty of hard work. He cut timber from nearby forests during the summer and harvested ice from local ponds in the winter. By the late 1930s, we had expanded into coal, beginning with a boxcar purchased on credit. We added fuel oil in the early 1940s and moved into air conditioning as residential cooling emerged in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Today, we focus on modern indoor comfort through heating, air conditioning, water heating, and fuel oil delivery. Our three divisions provide installation, service, and fuel delivery for residential and commercial customers. Whether someone needs routine maintenance, an emergency repair, replacement equipment, or a completely new system, we work to create a healthy, safe, efficient, and comfortable indoor environment. Our technicians service and install gas, electric, and oil furnaces; hot water and steam boilers; unit heaters; heat pumps; ductless mini-splits; geothermal systems; and packaged units. We also install whole-home humidifiers, dehumidifiers, and air purifiers.

Over the years, we have installed more than 30,000 systems throughout the Fredericksburg, Stafford, Spotsylvania, and King George areas. We purchased the remaining home heating oil accounts from Foster Fuel and Oil in 2000, and in 2015 we welcomed Stafford HVAC into the Robert B. Payne family. Our growth continues to come from customer referrals and our commitment to ongoing education and training as indoor comfort technology evolves. After more than nine decades, we remain dedicated to doing the job right and helping our customers with dependable heating, cooling, water heater, and fuel oil services.
